NPSH Available (NPSHa): Net Positive Suction Head Available (NPSHa) refers to the pressure available at the pump’s suction side, above the vapor pressure of the fluid being pumped. NPSHa is calculated based on factors like the height of the liquid, atmospheric pressure, and friction losses in the suction piping.
Essentially, it measures the margin between the pressure in the pump and the fluid’s vapor pressure. When NPSHa is insufficient, cavitation occurs, leading to the formation and collapse of vapor bubbles inside the pump. This causes shockwaves that hit the impeller, producing a “pumping rocks” sound and creating damaging vibrations. If left unchecked, cavitation can severely harm seals, bearings, and the pump shaft, leading to costly repairs. Proper NPSHa is critical to preventing cavitation and ensuring efficient pump operation.
NPSH Required (NPSHr): This is the minimum pressure required by the pump to avoid cavitation, as specified by the pump manufacturer. Cavitation occurs when the fluid’s pressure drops below its vapor pressure, causing vapor bubbles to form, which can implode and damage the pump.
To prevent cavitation, the NPSHa must be greater than the NPSHr. Understanding and managing NPSH is crucial for maintaining pump efficiency and longevity.
